The paper is the Introduction to the special issue of the Italian Journal of Sociology of Education on “Challenges of Education in the Mediterranean area: Policies, Systems, Actors”. After having outlined, in the first section, the challenges faced by social science and particularly by the Sociology of Education when assuming a Mediterranean perspective, in the second one, the paper analyses the linkages between intercultural dialogue and education in the Mediterranean Area. Finally, in the third section, through a concise description of the papers published in the special issue, the paper explores several “challenges of education” that can be acknowledged in the Mediterranean area.
