An approach to the performance evaluation of a communication protocol operating in a concurrent environment is described. The method defines suitable performance indices and outlines the implementation of a software monitor embedded in the protocol. The defined performance indices allow the protocol performance to be evaluated both in the adopted implementation and with regard to the application requirements.
