A new action principle for strings, superstrings and higher dimensional objects in any number of space-time dimensions is developed in detail. The ideas underlying this approach are illustrated in the context of relativistic point particle mechanics. This approach shows the existence of many qualitatively different extended objects at the classical or pseudoclassical level.
