In this study experimental investigations on the effects of grooves on brass slider bearings have been performed. Three different grooved slider bearings with four, eight and sixteen equally sized parabolic grooves machined on one bearing f flat-face have been used for the test campaign and the results have been compared to those obtained from a plane slider bearing. The experimental tests have been carried out by means of a rotational disc tribometer holding the steel tribological counterface. The lubricant used for the tribological investigation is a mineral oil ISO 100. For the test procedure with varying operating conditions, i.e. contact pressure, temperature and sliding speed, the coefficient of friction is lower for the grooved slider bearings than for the plane. Furthermore, the best tribological performance were obtained with the 8 grooves bearing that probably represents an optimum in bearings geometry for the tested material and the operating condition ranges. The friction coefficient trends are also in agreement to those predicted from the hydrodynamic lubrication theory.
