Abstract

The Sketchbook of the painter from Barletta had been posthumously published in 1894 on "Parisian Nouvelle Revue". The author now critically examines its relation to the memoir genre and the fragmentary version provided by his widow and etior Lèontine; as well, as how this literary work was later judged. Moreover, the author singles out mentioned and unemntioned facts from this autobiographical accaunt: namely, his relationship with Italy and some contemporary artists, his love for France; finally, when he took part in the competition for the monument to Victor Emmanuel II, during the celebrations for the Unification.
