In the current philosophical debate the concept of authority is often used together with the concept of autonomy to explain moral experience. The paper puts forward the thesis that authority cannot only be considered as an asymmetric relationship but also as a symmetric one. Based on Onora O’Neill’s constructivist interpretation of the Kantian concept of autonomy, the author discusses the theory of the authority of autonomous reason. In the second place, referring also to Carla Bagnoli’s position, he clarifies in what way authority, understood as normativity based on reason, can be conceived as symmetric authority. Finally, discussing Stephen Darwall’s thesis, he shows that, still based on Kant, authority can be considered a valid claim on the one hand, and mutual recognition on the other.

Abstract
In the current philosophical debate the concept of authority is often used together with the concept of autonomy to explain moral experience. The paper puts forward the thesis that authority cannot only be considered as an asymmetric relationship but also as a symmetric one. Based on Onora O’Neill’s constructivist interpretation of the Kantian concept of autonomy, the author discusses the theory of the authority of autonomous reason. In the second place, referring also to Carla Bagnoli’s position, he clarifies in what way authority, understood as normativity based on reason, can be conceived as symmetric authority. Finally, discussing Stephen Darwall’s thesis, he shows that, still based on Kant, authority can be considered a valid claim on the one hand, and mutual recognition on the other.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
