This paper provides an in-depth analysis of health literacy, drawing from the theoretical and empirical studies of the international scholarship. The research is realized through a literature review of the main qualitative and quantitative articles in the field of health literacy, gathered through a query by keywords in the citation database Scopus-Elsevier. The first section of the paper outlines the key features of the topic; then, an examination about the most relevant findings of the scholarship follows: it contains a wideranging discussion about the contribution of health literacy to the improvement of the individual well-being and to the sustainability of the healthcare system. Conclusions bring brief remarks on the role of health literacy for the promotion of public health.
