In this paper we discuss the concept of «land take» and its interpretations, focusing on the Italian experience. In particular, by using several sources of information (that directly or indirectly deal with land use/land cover), we analyse the specific structure that this phenomenon has taken at national level, in order to highlight the characteristics, the patterns and the evolutionary trends.
