Abstract

As a specific kind of action, ritual is often associated with a particularistic form of social solidarity. It is part of the inner nature of rites to rigidly separate the members of a community or group engaged in a celebration, from their social surroundings. This essay attempts to question this topic by looking at some way of "theorizing ritual". In particular, the inquiry examines the complex link between rites and the social dimension. The indirect, non- linear nature of this relationship must be taken into account in order to observe the proprieties that enable ritual to foster the construction of inclusive social ties.
