In this paper we examine the main empirical contributions on the relationships between productive efficiency and proprietary forms in the care sector. The international evidence indicates that nonprofit organisations (NPO's) are likely to be less cost-efficient but more attentive to the quality of the service. According to the Italian evidence, however, NPO's are as efficient as other organisations. NPO's efficiency is also positively related to the production of relational goods, highlighting the importance of intrinsic motivations. Finally, we discuss how our survey can contribute to future research and to the policy debate on the provision of care services.

Abstract
In this paper we examine the main empirical contributions on the relationships between productive efficiency and proprietary forms in the care sector. The international evidence indicates that nonprofit organisations (NPO's) are likely to be less cost-efficient but more attentive to the quality of the service. According to the Italian evidence, however, NPO's are as efficient as other organisations. NPO's efficiency is also positively related to the production of relational goods, highlighting the importance of intrinsic motivations. Finally, we discuss how our survey can contribute to future research and to the policy debate on the provision of care services.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
