The article presents some remarks on violence in Latin America, using the theoretical heritage of the founding fathers of sociology and a historical-comparative perspective. In particular, the comparison between Europe and Latin America highlights the different relationship between violence among States and violence within the States in these regions, generated by interstate competition and colonial heritage. The paper ends with some sociological observations on the peace processes underway in some Latin American countries, especially Colombia.
