This paper presents a reflection on the importance of undertaking the study of polymetry in Luis Vélez de Guevara’s plays. Starting from the analysis of the romances in the comedias de privanza, the article focuses on the functions of this metre on various levels of the dramatic text. Special attention is paid to the use of the romances in relation to the structure, the themes and the presence of specific characters on stage. Finally, some lines of future research are proposed to better understand the structural aspects of Vélez de Guevara’s works.
