Abstract
The paper focuses on the urban development of Pompeii, resuming the main archaeological data about the ancient city (city walls, urban planning, holy spaces, harbor) and the mythical-historical traditions concerning its foundation. Through this comparison Pompeii emerges as one of the most important settlements in archaic Campania, integrated in the dynamic network which connects the Tyrrhenian communities of Magna Graecia, Latium and Etruria. In the first half of fifth century B.C. Pompeii is involved in the political crisis that overwhelms the whole area of the southern Tyrrhenian: the settlement suffers a sharp decline while Nola of the Samnites emerges as the main indigenous center in Southern Campania. estrattoI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
