Abstract

It is not by accident that, from Jacob to Atlan, teleology comes out in the same context, that is, the celebration of modern genetic biology, which is supposedly finally able to respond to the question that torments biology: ‘Can life be reduced to physico-chemical phenomena?’ For both Jacob and Atlan, modern genetic biology has finally succeeded in explaining the genesis and structure of the living by means of merely physico-chemical factors, that is, according to a mechanistic model that they trace back to Descartes, according to which the knowledge of nature must be based exclusively on the principle of the sufficient cause and thus must have no recourse to final causes.
