The aim of this paper is to investigate the correlation between the technological proximity measure based on patent citations in three economic areas: US, Japan and the Europe. In order to compute the technological proximity, we implement the “overlap citation” measure. This index asks how many of the patents that one firm cites are also cited by another firm. The contribution to the existing literature is to analyse the robust- ness of the overlap citation proximity measure and the extent to which it can be influenced by patent systems.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the correlation between the technological proximity measure based on patent citations in three economic areas: US, Japan and the Europe. In order to compute the technological proximity, we implement the “overlap citation” measure. This index asks how many of the patents that one firm cites are also cited by another firm. The contribution to the existing literature is to analyse the robust- ness of the overlap citation proximity measure and the extent to which it can be influenced by patent systems.
