REHABITARE. THE REUSE AS STRATEGY FOR THE RESTORATION AND THE RE-USE OF PALAZZO SAN MASSIMO IN SALERNO

The monumental complex of San Massimo is located in the oldest part of Salerno, a charming city in southern Italy. Lombards princes, religious orders and noble families have settled in the rooms of this building that still features architectural elements of the Renaissance period that make it unique in its kind. A project proposal aware of the needs of the territory, an intervention able to give back to the city a monument of undoubted value. Rehabitare. Rehab and Abitare, express the idea behind the whole project: re-instating, re- inhabiting, living again. The rooms of the Palace turned into hotels de charme, a new function that fits within the structure respecting it and enhancing its value elements. A proposal that, evaluated also from an economic point of view, is concrete, feasible and capable of indirectly triggering projects for the redevelopment of the whole historic center.

Il complesso monumentale di San Massimo si trova nella parte più antica di Salerno, suggestiva città del Sud Italia. Principi longobardi, ordini religiosi e famiglie nobiliari si sono insediati negli ambienti di questo palazzo che presenta, ancora oggi, elementi architettonici di epoca rinascimentale che lo rendono unico nel suo genere. Una proposta di progetto consapevole delle esigenze del territorio, un intervento in grado di restituire alla città un monumento di indubbio valore. Rehabitare. Rehab e Abitare, esprimono l’idea alla base di tutto il progetto: riabilitare, riabitare, abitare nuovamente. Gli ambienti del Palazzo destinati ad hotel de charme, una nuova funzione che si inserisce all’interno della struttura rispettandola e valorizzandone gli elementi di pregio. Una proposta che, valutata anche sotto il profilo economico, si presenta concreta, fattibile e capace di innescare indirettamente iniziative di riqualificazione di tutto il centro storico.
