The city of Kyoto, in Japan, shows history from its streets, squares, religious temples and civil buildings. The city that, in the country of economic and technological power, has been able to strongly defend its historical and cultural heritage; it is the city of architecture without architects where the historical building artefacts have a cultural value as a testimony of ages and technologies that are now outdated but still sophisticated and diversified. Kyoto has a great variety of colored earths: browns, yellows, reds to the more or less dark greens. These assortments helped architects and builders in the development of the culture of the heart walls, both for the construction and for the decorations. This way of building and treating surfaces is unique in the world, simple but sophisticated construction details, aesthetic and decorative elements that recall the great ancient Japanese tradition. In this contribution, some examples of residential and public housing will be analyzed, by demonstrating the special characteristics of the products and the treatment of surfaces combined in a fruitful dialogue between the place, the history and the nature, in contrast with the modern Japanese architecture, made of light, transparency and standardized industrial materials. It’s interesting for the experience, the intelligence and the technical ability of a simple architecture but at the same time evocative and functional, far from the beliefs and the usual western stylistic elements.
