The purpose of this paper is to discuss the main aspects of Leszek Kolakowski’s conference The Revenge of the Sacred in Secular Culture. Two themes are taken into account above all: the critique of functionalist evaluations of religious phenomenon, the relationship between critical tendencies and conservative authority of sacred beliefs. Kolakowski’s theoretical proposal emphasizes the need to preserve a constructive discord between opposing intellectual and practical attitudes.
