As is well known, Franz Rosenzweig’s reflection on the “and” stems from Hermann Cohen’s concept of correlation. The paper sets out to show in what way thinking in terms of correlation creates a relationship between the distinguishing elements of life through knowledge. Indeed, knowledge is not only a theoretical attitude; it should also be understood as a relationship giving space to the most intimate communion of opposites. Both Rosenzweig and Cohen seem to invite us to think in terms of correlation, which is perhaps the only way to be related and safeguard the differences within a union.

Abstract

As is well known, Franz Rosenzweig’s reflection on the “and” stems from Hermann Cohen’s concept of correlation. The paper sets out to show in what way thinking in terms of correlation creates a relationship between the distinguishing elements of life through knowledge. Indeed, knowledge is not only a theoretical attitude; it should also be understood as a relationship giving space to the most intimate communion of opposites. Both Rosenzweig and Cohen seem to invite us to think in terms of correlation, which is perhaps the only way to be related and safeguard the differences within a union.
