The present essay offers an overall reconstruction of the works of Francesco Cicino, born in Caiazzo and active from the late 15th century to the early 16th century both in Naples and in the territories to the north of Naples from whence he came. Reviewing documentary evidence and studies dealing with this artist, starting with the decisive connection proposed by Causa between a document dated 1498, published by Filangieri, and the altar piece in the Church of San Paolo Maggiore in Naples, it becomes evident that Francesco Cicino had a major role in the introduction and diffusion in southern Italy of a style influenced by late-15th-century Roman painting, and especially by the works of Antoniazzo Romano and Pintoricchio, in support of which see the new attribution to the artist’s catalogue proposed in the present text.

Abstract
The present essay offers an overall reconstruction of the works of Francesco Cicino, born in Caiazzo and active from the late 15th century to the early 16th century both in Naples and in the territories to the north of Naples from whence he came. Reviewing documentary evidence and studies dealing with this artist, starting with the decisive connection proposed by Causa between a document dated 1498, published by Filangieri, and the altar piece in the Church of San Paolo Maggiore in Naples, it becomes evident that Francesco Cicino had a major role in the introduction and diffusion in southern Italy of a style influenced by late-15th-century Roman painting, and especially by the works of Antoniazzo Romano and Pintoricchio, in support of which see the new attribution to the artist’s catalogue proposed in the present text.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
