The article describes the phenomenon of young NEET in Italy (an English acronym translated as Ni-ni in Spain) through a reading of gender. From an analysis of the elements that determine the phenomenon in Italy: the centrality of the family and women in the welfare system, and the youth issue that sees the younger generations as the protagonists of a slow process of leaving their family of origin, we present the results of two groups with young NEET. The reflections show that for NEET living in an area of Southern Italy, gender identity still goes through a rigid subdivision of gender roles and the protective role of the family runs the risk of creating a perverse effect that slows down social development of younger generations.
