The eccentric condition is that of a man, at the same time, always at the center and always at the periphery of himself. If eccentricity sums up Helmuth Plessner's anthropological model, the eccentric condition summarizes the coordinates of the modern world: a world of worlds, with infinite centers and infinite peripheries. The article connects the anthropological connotations of eccentricity, which is articulated on the border between opposite extremes (mind-body, subject-object, reality-appearance, nature-artifice), with the features of the secular age. These features have in common an irreducible complexity, which can only be governed by different strategies, but never removed. The article shows some aspects of this complexity in epistemology (perspectivism), ethics (virtue as an art of living), politics (as the art of government and prudence), which represent just as many daily challenges of our excentric way of life.
