Erasmus of Rotterdam and Michel de Montaigne are aware of the impor- tance of memory. However, if on the one hand memory can be enhanced by rigour and exercise, on the other it should never be forced beyond its natural limits. The two think- ers examined in this essay are, therefore, quite critical of Ars memoriae. Both Erasmus and Montaigne believe that not everything is worth of being remembered. Indeed, they argue, forgetting, too, may prove advantageous.

Abstract
Erasmus of Rotterdam and Michel de Montaigne are aware of the impor- tance of memory. However, if on the one hand memory can be enhanced by rigour and exercise, on the other it should never be forced beyond its natural limits. The two think- ers examined in this essay are, therefore, quite critical of Ars memoriae. Both Erasmus and Montaigne believe that not everything is worth of being remembered. Indeed, they argue, forgetting, too, may prove advantageous.File in questo prodotto:
