ABSTRACT: In XVIIIth Century the South of Italy concentrated on the development of sea trade. Michele de Jorio author of the Codice Marittimo of 1781, which was never applied, as member of the Supreme Magistrate of Commerce elaborated the Regolamento economico-legale per la pesca dei coralli, which was heavily practiced in Torre del Greco. It should have disciplined the competences of the law and the profitability of the field. It united the habits of the sea to the needs and the innovations of the times. The jurist encouraged the creation of a local Company with exclusive right to purchase, work and sell coral. The implementation of the law on coral and of the Company was hindered by natural, political and military events. In 1877 though, with the editing of the new Codice della marina mercantile, it was pointed out that the Codice Corallino of 1790 was to be considered as a former legitimate reference.
