This continuation of creation by the imagination consists in creating something eternal rather than temporal: «the work of art lives forever», Pirandello affirms too. Imagination and art are therefore the spheres where everything is eternal in, where everything is saved from the danger of annihilation. But if everything is eternal, pain is eternal too. In fact the six characters in search of an author are eternal figures and each of them is the emblem of an aspect of pain. The way towards an eternity that can only be desired, as a salvation from the anguish of annihilation, falls in with the obstacle of an eternity that can only be feared, as an eternity of pain.
