De Chirico's oeuvre, which - in his early years - can be divided into precis phases, styles, subjects, iconography and poetic themes, has made it possible to give each tome a monographic character, making it valid and usable even as a stand-alone work. The first volume «The Late Romantic and Early Metaphysical Work» includes all the paintings and drawings between the autumn of 1908 and February 1919 and all the reshoots, copies or variants of metaphysical subjects (approx. 70 works) documented between 1922 and 1943. Volumes two to six cover the time span from February 1919 to the autumn of 1943 and catalog approx. 1200 paintings documented between the two wars. Volume I consists of 7 fascicles. Fascicle 2 «The Italian Mystery: Turin, Ariadne and the Sabaudian enigmas. March 1912 | October 1913» has a strictly respected chronological sequence of works for 1912. On the other hand, the works of 1913, for the sake of readability and clarity, are arranged in this sequence: drawings, portraits and nudes attributable to the first part of the year; compositions with Ariadne and related drawings in chronological order; towers, chimneys and other compositions with related drawings in chronological order; drawings attributable to the summer-autumn period of 1913. An extensive, reasoned and illustrated chronology is supplemented by iconographic and stylistic commentary on the works in the individual files. Each volume is the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment available today to understand an artist surrounded by enigmas and mysteries: one of the most compelling and important creative and intellectual events of the 20th century.
