In his latest book, Geminello Preterossi uses the expression “political theology” to investigate the correspondence that exists, even in the modern age, between political and theological concepts. The author affirms that political theology is inextinguishable. Starting from Preterossi’s book, this article analyzes the reasons for this inextinguishability, on the one hand by working genealogically, that is highlighting what political theology consists of and why it represents a genetic element of modernity; on the other, by mapping the more or less manifest forms of political theology, which still operate today.

Abstract

In his latest book, Geminello Preterossi uses the expression “political theology” to investigate the correspondence that exists, even in the modern age, between political and theological concepts. The author affirms that political theology is inextinguishable. Starting from Preterossi’s book, this article analyzes the reasons for this inextinguishability, on the one hand by working genealogically, that is highlighting what political theology consists of and why it represents a genetic element of modernity; on the other, by mapping the more or less manifest forms of political theology, which still operate today.
