The aim of this article is to provide a diachronic re-reading of some irregular classics of social enquiry in Italy, conducted by writers, essayists and journalists (from Carlo Levi to Danilo Montaldi), in order to exam-ine the unprecedented linguistic-narrative skills of the dominated during interviews, as well as in life stories and autobiographies, far more than the authors who encountered them did. It also seeks to show to what extent these expressive skills, synchroni-cally compared, manage to form a kind of region relatively unrelated to the respondents’ consciousness. Finally, by detecting the existence of poetic patterns adopted in their language, the article intends to explore the connection between subjectiv-ity and domination.
