This article discusses the hypothesis that we possess only an aristocratic representation of Lycurgus’ συσσίτιον, and that modern scholars have wrongly interpreted it as an actual description. The συσσίτιον may have been structured from its origins as an ἄικλον, sparse and equal for all, and an ἐπάικλον, in which the differences between the various συσσίτια, including the Spartan ones of different rank, emerged.
