The contribution deals with the issue of inner areas, focusing on both the initiatives to date implemented for their “re-centralization” and the objectives and contents of a recently research project funded by Ministry of the Environment and Land and Sea Protection: “Re-inhabiting Countries. Operational Strategies for the Enhancement and Resilience of Innner Areas” (RI.P.R.O.VA.RE). In line with the Strategic Choice III - Planet Area of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development (SNSVs), this Project, with reference to inner areas located in two Southern Italy Regions, aims at outlining new criteria for classifying and bordering these areas, methods and tools to evaluate and strengthen their resilience and integrated development strategies capable of combining enhancement of citizenship’ services, risk reduction, regeneration and enhancement of local resources.
