Between 1965 and 1980 the Soprintendenza Archeologica carried out systematic explorations in the area of Foce Sarno where, after excavation works for to the construction of a manufacturing installation, a remarkable number of votive clay objects and the remains of an Hellenistic theater came to light. Based on a preliminary analysis of archaeological stratigraphy with a selection of finds, scholars supposed that it was a sanctuary provided with a building linked to plays and dedicated to a chthonic female divinity, at the foot of the high mountain from which the springs, that feed the main branch of the Sarno river, born. The paper shows the results of a study, carried out with an agreement between the Museum Center and the University of Salerno; it suggests a reinterpretation of this important area based on the systemization of the data obtained from the excavation documents, the architectural structures in situ and of the systematic analysis of ceramic, architectural and coroplastic finds recovered during the investigations.

Abstract
The paper shows the results of a study, carried out with an agreement between the Museum Center and the University of Salerno; it suggests a reinterpretation of this important area based on the systemization of the data obtained from the excavation documents, the architectural structures in situ and of the systematic analysis of ceramic, architectural and coroplastic finds recovered during the investigations.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
