This chapter introduces basic definitions and notations common to all assignment models proposed in the next chapters, as well as the arc flow function as a flexible model for static assignment to uncongested networks; it is also useful as a part of models for assignment to congested network as discussed in the next chapters. Several examples of a toy network are analysed and discussed.

Abstract
