This article can be considered as an introductory framework progressively lead-ing to a more systematic study on the language situation in the border area be-tween Černihiv and Homel’. Two related reasons induced me to first focus on the town and region of Černihiv rather than directly on the language situation of the adjacent north-western districts of Ripky and Horodnja. The first reason has to do with the fact that a consistent description of the neighbouring areas would have been incomplete without an insight into the language situation of the main regional town. Secondly, sociolinguistic studies specifically devoted to Černihiv and its region are limited both in number and in factual materials After a short explanation of the applied research methods (Section 1) I in-tend to first delineate the situation of Černihiv in the context of the general Ukrainian language situation (Section 2). The specific ethnic and language dis-tribution in the town and region of Černihiv and ongoing changes in the linguis-tic landscape of Černihiv will be discussed in the remaining Sections 3 and 4.
