Abstract

In southern Italy, after the Islamic conquests of Byzantine territories, there was a migratory flow of monks who settled between Sicily and Campania, preferring harsh and less frequented territories. The traces of this phenomenon survive in Campania, in particular in two coastal areas, Amalfi and Cilento. In the latter one, specifically, between Camerota and Mingardo river; there are ruins of a monastic complex, knowned from the sources, to which belonged the church of San Cono, today in a serious state of abandonment. This paper presents the first results of the investigations and the first considerations on the fresco fragments that still survive inside one of the buildings, referable to a late Medieval occupation.
