The article outlines, through a synthesis of research already published, the development, the ‘vocations’, and the crisis that Pithekoussai experienced within the dynamics of relations, mobility, and exchanges occurring in the area of the central-western Mediterranean since at least the first half of the 9th century BC. The first section is dedicated to reviewing the network of relations linking Campania to Sicily, Sardinia, the Iberian Peninsula, and North Africa. This network of relationships runs on from the Iron Age. The second section sets out to locate the foundation of Pithekoussai, around the middle of the 8th century BC, in the broader pattern of similar colonial foundation processes, which at the same time are taking place in the western Mediterranean under Phoenician incentives and with the consent of local communities.

Abstract
The article outlines, through a synthesis of research already published, the development, the ‘vocations’, and the crisis that Pithekoussai experienced within the dynamics of relations, mobility, and exchanges occurring in the area of the central-western Mediterranean since at least the first half of the 9th century BC. The first section is dedicated to reviewing the network of relations linking Campania to Sicily, Sardinia, the Iberian Peninsula, and North Africa. This network of relationships runs on from the Iron Age. The second section sets out to locate the foundation of Pithekoussai, around the middle of the 8th century BC, in the broader pattern of similar colonial foundation processes, which at the same time are taking place in the western Mediterranean under Phoenician incentives and with the consent of local communities.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
