Abstract

What are the main invariants in the thought of the authors who – in the second half of the 20th century – elaborated the conceptual figure of the neuter? What are the most radical aspects of this figure with respect to the philosophical tradi- tion? With Maurice Blanchot and Roland Barthes, the notion of neuter takes on the value of a theoretical invention to reconfigure the very terms of the general problematic of identity and difference. The topic is here discussed with refer- ence to its influence on the ethical level and to the questions of violence, the status of discourse, and the tasks of thought.
