The main protagonist of the study is Count Sergei Stroganov, who reflected on the pos - sible limitation of imperial power in 1836 during the scandal surrounding the publication of Chaadaev’s first “Philosophical Letter”, and in the early 1860s, when Stroganov was engaged in the education of Grand Duke Nicholas Alexandrovich. The aim of the paper is to show how projects designed to soften the absolute character of the Russian autocracy developed within the political elite loyal to the monarch.
