Moving from an exploration of a group of poems and short stories written and published by Pirandello between 1883 and 1904, the present study explores the forms and causes of Pirandello’s mythopoiesis in the light of the ‘crisis of presence’ theorized by the anthropologist Ernesto de Martino in Il mondo magico (1948). The need to elaborate a new mythopoiesis―as the author himself seems to ‘announce’ from Mal giocondo (1889) onwards―appears to be Pirandello’s first response to a perceived need of modern man: the need to find answers to questions about existence that fin de siècle culture is no longer able to offer. Through its intrinsic symbolic magism, the mythical dimension thus establishes itself as a privileged access route to the ‘beyond’, where revealing illuminations can possibly be found, effectively ‘protecting the presence from the crisis’.
