The article derives from the desire to reconstruct the political events in Guatemala from 1944 to 1954. The events are interpreted through the lens of Italian diplomacy. Through an innovative contribution, it aims to delve deeper into a crucial historical period for Guatemala. Specifically, the paper attempts to answer how the alternation between “internal” (political-economic instability) and “external” (the breakdown of relations with Washington) fractures has conditioned the democratization process in the Central American state. The work is divided into two parts. The first focuses on a hemispheric perspective to examine the shift in inter-American relations from the end of World War II to the beginning of the Cold War. The second highlights a regional dimension to interpret the Central American Republic’s path toward socialism, culminating in the American intervention to delegitimize Árbenz’s administration.
