The city of Salerno has been affected since 2010 by an intensification of attempts by the municipal administration to remove Senegalese and Bangladeshi street vendors. Based on a series of research works, the article presents a case study to highlight the relationship that has been established between the development of specific processes of gentrification of tourism and the attempts to remove subjects deemed ‘undesirable’ from urban space.

Abstract

The city of Salerno has been affected since 2010 by an intensification of attempts by the municipal administration to remove Senegalese and Bangladeshi street vendors. Based on a series of research works, the article presents a case study to highlight the relationship that has been established between the development of specific processes of gentrification of tourism and the attempts to remove subjects deemed ‘undesirable’ from urban space.
