This paper reconstructs the correspondence between a group of Rhodian didrachms and a sporadic issue of Gortynian drachms, characterized by types and weights related to Rhodian coinage. These Gortynian coins appear to have been minted to facilitate the introduction of foreign currency into the local economy through a direct exchange system. Although this monetary phenomenon is unusual, it provides valuable insights into a poorly documented phase of the Cretan economy, shaped by complex historical events. The analysis considers aspects such as countermarking, recirculation, and hoarding practices, contributing to the understanding of a rapidly evolving monetary system.

Abstract
This paper reconstructs the correspondence between a group of Rhodian didrachms and a sporadic issue of Gortynian drachms, characterized by types and weights related to Rhodian coinage. These Gortynian coins appear to have been minted to facilitate the introduction of foreign currency into the local economy through a direct exchange system. Although this monetary phenomenon is unusual, it provides valuable insights into a poorly documented phase of the Cretan economy, shaped by complex historical events. The analysis considers aspects such as countermarking, recirculation, and hoarding practices, contributing to the understanding of a rapidly evolving monetary system.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
