his article seeks to analyze political discursive practices through the conceptual and analytical lens of sociolinguistics as articulated in the works of Abdelmalek Sayad. In particular, it focuses on the discursive narratives conveyed by the State and the media in a broad context. We propose to investigate how expressions frequently used by these agents, such as “migration crisis,” and the use of figures of speech demand a critical and socio-historical understanding of their formulations and applications. To achieve this, we conducted a comprehensive literature review of on his work, covering nearly four decades of academic production, as well as consulting part of his personal archive stored at the Archives Nationales in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine. The central argument of this analytical exercise is to highlight the contribution that his critical sociology makes in denouncing narratives that reify migrants and the migratory phenomenon while also presenting alternatives for producing emancipatory knowledge about these issues.
