Few times in history the complex plots of dynastic politics would have ended up uniting two characters so radically different as Ferdinand and Marie Caroline. This profound difference in their character, together with the judgments produced by their political opponents during the Revolutionary period, would have contributed to build that stereotypical and caricatural vision, but also to consolidate the explanation of the political predominance of the Queen. This article investigates the true nature of the relations between the two sovereigns highlighting the real balances within the Neapolitan court.

Abstract

Few times in history the complex plots of dynastic politics would have ended up uniting two characters so radically different as Ferdinand and Marie Caroline. This profound difference in their character, together with the judgments produced by their political opponents during the Revolutionary period, would have contributed to build that stereotypical and caricatural vision, but also to consolidate the explanation of the political predominance of the Queen. This article investigates the true nature of the relations between the two sovereigns highlighting the real balances within the Neapolitan court.
