Human emissions can disrupt natural cycles and contribute to air pollution. This study focuses on analyzing volatile organic compounds known as BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers) emitted mainly by oil and gas extraction as well as consumer products. The study was conducted near the Lazaro Cárdenas del Río refinery in Minatitlan, Veracruz, to measure BTEX concentrations. A risk analysis indicated a significant cancer risk (LTCR) for the population, particularly in children, surpassing the limits set by the US EPA and WHO. While the non-cancer risk (HQ) is within limits, the overall risk index (HI) underscores the necessity for mitigation measures to safeguard public health.

Abstract
While the non-cancer risk (HQ) is within limits, the overall risk index (HI) underscores the necessity for mitigation measures to safeguard public health.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
