The paper provides an update on recent research concerning the coinage of the Cretan cities of Gortyna and Phaistos, situating it within the broader context of numismatic studies on the island between the 4th and 1st centuries BC. The investigations highlight how the two mints shared several common features, including iconographic motifs, weight standards, and production methodologies, reflecting close institutional and territorial connections. Despite the limited presence of Hellenistic coins in urban excavation contexts, a significant contribution emerges from hoards, often dispersed in private or museum collections, which allows for a more detailed outline of the economic and financial dynamics in Crete. The weight and chronological analysis of the emissions further reveal how variations in coin production responded to specific local needs, often driven by historical contingencies such as military conflicts or economic crises, emphasizing the role of coinage not only as an economic tool but also as a political and social instrument in managing community resources.

Abstract
The weight and chronological analysis of the emissions further reveal how variations in coin production responded to specific local needs, often driven by historical contingencies such as military conflicts or economic crises, emphasizing the role of coinage not only as an economic tool but also as a political and social instrument in managing community resources.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
