Abstract

The revision of the documentation preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of the Sarno Valley permitted to deepen some aspects about this territorial area, especially for the Classical and Hellenistic ages. In this contribution, attention has been concentrated on thirteen red-figure vases recovered in Sarno, in the necropolis and in the sacred area of Foce, which invite us to formulate some considerations. The vases, from female depositions, dated between the last decades of the 4th and the first years of the 3rd century B.C., are decorated with one or two female heads. While showing affinities with those traced back by A.D. Trendall to the “Fratte Group”, due to the mixture of elements that distinguishes them, they solicit some considerations on the overcoming of the very concept of “group” and the painter’s hand in favour of a broader reflection on the areas of production and circulation of models and craftsmen, of different training and origins.
