The paper analyzes the complex relationship between the desacralization of the world, the problem of secularization and the genesis of modernity. According to Francesco Saverio Festa, the real problem of secularization does not lie in the genesis of modernity, as Blumenberg believed, but in its outcome. Starting from the opposition of Pauline Christianity to gnosis, the erroneous identification between Christian eschatology and Jewish messianism is criticized. As Hermann Cohen points out, the end of days never indicates the end of times. Keywords: Paul of Tarsus, Gnosis, History, Eschatology, Messianism
