The article explores Max Dvořák's conception of the early Italian Renaissance, based on a selection of writings from the years 1898 to 1918 (two of them being unpublished archival material), which provides insight into his ideas from the beginning of his career until his maturity: two manuscripts for lectures held in Vienna, respectively at the Akademisches Gymnasium and the Urania On the Main Epochs in the Development of Modern Art (presumably his first public German lecture) and on Giotto as well as the first part of Dvořák's History of Italian Art in the Age of the Renaissance. The choice is centred on the genesis of the Renaissance and its precursors, in particular the figure of Giotto and late medieval art in general.

Abstract
The article explores Max Dvořák's conception of the early Italian Renaissance, based on a selection of writings from the years 1898 to 1918 (two of them being unpublished archival material), which provides insight into his ideas from the beginning of his career until his maturity: two manuscripts for lectures held in Vienna, respectively at the Akademisches Gymnasium and the Urania On the Main Epochs in the Development of Modern Art (presumably his first public German lecture) and on Giotto as well as the first part of Dvořák's History of Italian Art in the Age of the Renaissance. The choice is centred on the genesis of the Renaissance and its precursors, in particular the figure of Giotto and late medieval art in general.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
