L’underachievement negli studenti dotati rappresenta un fenomeno complesso influenzato da fattori interni, come la bassa motivazione, l'autoefficacia accademica ridotta e difficoltà socio-emotive, e da fattori esterni, quali le dinamiche familiari, l'ambiente scolastico, le relazioni con i pari e lo status socio-economico. Le evidenze neuroscientifiche suggeriscono che gli studenti dotati presentano una maggiore connettività cerebrale, che consente loro di elaborare le informazioni con maggiore efficienza. Strumenti come il GUT e il GRSS si rivelano fondamentali per una diagnosi precoce e per l'attuazione di interventi mirati.
