The theory of tyrannicide expounded by George Buchanan in De iure regni apud Scotos is widely regarded as one of the most radical theories in early modern philosophy. However, when considered in its historical and philosophical context, and analysed in terms of its textual development, the theory appears well integrated into the thinking of the time. Above all, it avoids the danger of anarchy that would result from the indiscriminate application of tyrannicide. In this context, Buchanan emerges as a proponent of the ideals of classical antiquity, showing little interest in the religious aspects of the issue, unlike his contemporaries.

Abstract

The theory of tyrannicide expounded by George Buchanan in De iure regni apud Scotos is widely regarded as one of the most radical theories in early modern philosophy. However, when considered in its historical and philosophical context, and analysed in terms of its textual development, the theory appears well integrated into the thinking of the time. Above all, it avoids the danger of anarchy that would result from the indiscriminate application of tyrannicide. In this context, Buchanan emerges as a proponent of the ideals of classical antiquity, showing little interest in the religious aspects of the issue, unlike his contemporaries.
